Dear Iowa DREAMers and Allies,

My name is Walter Abrego. I’m a communication major at UNI and the Communications Director here at DREAM Iowa (we’re a new immigrant led organization started by Iowa DREAMers and allies who care deeply about the undocumented community).

I’m emailing you because I either received your contact information from a friend or colleague or because you have expressed interest in working with the undocumented community here in Iowa.

As you know, this November President Obama announced a new immigration program that expands DACA-like deportation relief to 5 million people across the country. Here in Iowa, we anticipate that this program could impact 17,000 Iowans.

President Obama’s new program will allow so many people to follow their American dream through access to driver’s license, work permits, and protection from deportation. At DREAM Iowa, we’re working to educate as many Iowans as possible about this new program and we think the best way to do this is through community meetings.

On Sunday, December 21, 2014, DREAM Iowa is hosting our first community meeting. The meeting will be held in Denison at noon. If you would like to attend this meeting please clickhere.

The meeting in Denison will feature DREAMers, immigration attorneys, and community leaders who care about the undocumented community. Our goal is to educate the undocumented community in Iowa both about their rights as Iowa residents as well as the President’s executive action on immigration.

Denison is a fitting place to host our first community meeting because it has a sizeable undocumented population and is also the hometown of my Congressman, Steve King, who has spent the last few weeks trying to end the President’s new immigration policy. By holding the event in Denison, we are showing Representative King that Obama’s immigration action is good for Iowa and impacts many families living here. We are inviting Representative King to the event and we hope he decides to attend.

If you would like to organize a community meeting in your area about President Obama’s new immigration policy, or already have one planned, please click here.

We’d love to help organize meetings in Marshalltown, Storm Lake, Sioux City, Sibley, Sioux Center, Estherville, Postville, Dubuque Davenport, Decorah, Council Bluffs, Hampton, New Hampton, Cedar Rapids, Wapello, West Liberty and Waterloo and we’re willing to go to any community that would like help.

Thanks for your support,

Walter Abrego
